THE CONCEPT
The Yards Bike Park is designed as a community recreation precinct where people can ride, gather, watch, learn and spend time outdoors.
At its heart is a purpose-built, progressive riding precinct featuring a skills track, jump lines and beginner riding areas designed to support riders of all ages and abilities. Surrounding these are community spaces, landscaped spectator areas, shelters and supporting facilities that make it a place to enjoy both on and off the bike.
The design has also been developed to reflect Tenterfield's unique character, incorporating granite features, natural earth forms and agricultural elements that celebrate the region while creating a distinctive place to ride, gather and connect.
The broader vision also includes a future event pavilion and flexible community event space on the north of the site, creating opportunities for markets, festivals, live music, cycling events and other community activities as future funding becomes available.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE YARDS?
The Yards Bike Park has been designed as a purpose-built recreation precinct that brings together riding, recreation and community.
The concept combines purpose-built riding features, community spaces, supporting facilities and landscaping to create a place where people of all ages and abilities can ride, progress, connect and spend time outdoors.
Skills Track & Session Trails
The Skills Track is the heart of The Yards, where riders can choose different lines, link features together, practise techniques and progress at their own pace.
Rollers, berms and signature ride-through features create an engaging experience that can be enjoyed by everyone, from beginners through to elite athletes.
The concept also includes a removable airbag jump to support coaching, demonstrations, events and advanced rider training.
Progressive Jump Lines
Three purpose-built jump lines provide opportunities for riders to safely build skills and confidence over time.
Separate Beginner (Green), Intermediate (Blue) and Advanced (Black) lines allow riders to choose features that match their experience, creating a clear progression pathway from first jumps through to competition-level riding.
Bike Playground
A dedicated beginner area provides younger children and first-time riders with a fun, low-pressure place to build confidence.
Small rollers, gentle turns and playful riding features introduce basic riding skills before riders progress to the larger Skills Track and Progressive Jump Lines.
The playground includes informal gathering spaces where families, friends and young riders can meet, rest and spend time together.
Community Facilities
The Yards has been designed as more than a place to ride.
Supporting facilities include shelters, seating, picnic areas, an amenities block, bike wash facilities and landscaped gathering spaces, creating a welcoming environment for riders, families and spectators.
These facilities support everyday use of the precinct, making it comfortable and accessible for the whole community.
Events & Festivals
The masterplan includes a multi-purpose pavilion and adjoining event space, creating opportunities for a wide range of community events (pavilion subject to future funding).
The space has been planned to host markets, live music, youth events, food festivals, community celebrations, presentations, cycling events and major gatherings throughout the year.
Together with the bike park, it creates opportunities for new events, new experiences and a more vibrant community.
Community Spaces
Beyond the riding features, The Yards has been designed as a place where recreation and community come together.
Landscaped seating areas, picnic spaces and informal gathering places encourage families, friends and visitors to enjoy the precinct, whether they're riding, spectating or simply spending time outdoors.
The result is a welcoming public space that can be enjoyed by the whole community.

FAQs
-
Existing riding facilities at the Youth Precinct in Tenterfield provide a good introduction to riding, but they don't offer the size, progression or diversity needed to support long-term skill development or attract major events.
The Yards Bike Park has been designed to complement existing facilities by providing beginner through to advanced riding opportunities in one location, while also creating a broader recreation precinct for the community.
-
Located just 1km from the town centre, the former Landers Street Hockey Fields are already designated for recreation and connected to the shared recreation path along Tenterfield Creek, with easy road access.
Its size, relatively flat topography and history as hockey fields make it well suited to a regional riding precinct while complementing nearby facilities including the showgrounds, Federation Park sports fields, Rotary Park playground, Shirley Park and the swimming pool.
Together, these facilities help position Tenterfield as one of Australia's most diverse regional recreation and adventure destinations.
-
The design has been shaped by three key principles: progression, place and longevity. The Yards provides a clear progression pathway from beginners (green) to experienced (black) riders for all ages and abilities.
Granite features, natural earth forms and agricultural elements have been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the precinct, creating a distinctive bike park that reflects the character of the region.
Materials and construction methods have also been carefully selected to create a facility that is attractive, durable and practical to maintain over the long term.
-
The Yards Bike Park is being delivered through funding from the Australian Government's Growing Regions Program.
Once complete, ongoing operations and maintenance of the precinct will be managed by Angry Bull Trails as part of its broader trail network and recreation precinct.
The project forms part of Angry Bull Trails' broader vision to create world-class riding experiences, youth employment opportunities and community recreation facilities in Tenterfield.
-
A detailed Flood Impact Assessment has been completed.
The bike park has been specifically designed to be flood resilient. Earth mounding, berms and carefully designed drainage infrastructure help manage the movement of floodwater through the site while ensuring the development does not increase flood impacts on surrounding infrastructure.
The assessment demonstrates that the proposed mitigation measures maintain appropriate flood behaviour while creating a safe and functional recreation precinct.
-
The design retains significant existing trees wherever possible and includes additional landscaping and planting throughout the precinct. Detailed tree management will form part of the final design and construction process.
-
The design incorporates Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, creating an open, welcoming space with clear sightlines throughout the precinct.
Shelters, seating areas and gathering spaces are located to encourage regular community use and passive surveillance, while elevated viewing areas provide natural oversight of the riding features.
Together, these elements help create a safe, active public space that encourages community ownership and discourages anti-social behaviour.
-
Angry Bull Trails is committed to maintaining the bike park and associated facilities as part of its broader trail network and recreation precinct.
The precinct has been designed using durable materials and construction methods that balance longevity with the character of the site, creating a facility that is attractive, functional and practical to maintain.
Long-term maintenance has been incorporated into Angry Bull Trails' operational planning to help ensure the precinct remains safe, functional and enjoyable for years to come.
-
The Yards has been designed as a public recreation precinct where people can continue to walk, relax and enjoy the outdoors.
The southern section of the site will become an active riding area, so off-leash dogs will no longer be appropriate within the bike park itself for the safety of both riders and animals.
The northern section of the site will continue to provide open space for the community.
-
The Development Application has now been lodged with Tenterfield Shire Council.
Once approved, the project will move into detailed design before construction begins. Stage One will deliver the southern riding precinct, while the event pavilion and entertainment precinct remain part of the longer-term vision as future funding becomes available.
Construction is expected to begin following approval, with anticipated completion of The Yards Bike Park anticipated in the first half of 2027.
