Community Update - May 2026

There’s been a lot happening behind the scenes at Angry Bull Trails lately, and we wanted to share a quick update across the major parts of the project – the trails, Trail Centre and social enterprise.

TRAILS

Construction on the first stage of the trail network has been charging along and we’re nearing completion of this initial build phase, with more than 55km of trails now built. A huge thanks to Trailworx and the guys on the ground for the awesome work they’ve been doing. We’ve spent years working towards this, so finally seeing riders out there is going to be a pretty special moment for everyone involved.

The question everyone keeps asking us is obviously: when do the trails open?

Like many large-scale projects, we’ve hit a few delays along the way. We’re aiming to open the first trails in Winter 2026, however we’re continuing to work through final approvals and processes with land managers before public access can be confirmed.

At this stage, we’re not in a position to release an official opening date, but as soon as we can, it will be announced through our e-newsletter and website and social media channels. If you want to hear it first, make sure you’re subscribed to our e-newsletter.

We’re well into work on Stage 2, and excited to announce that Common Ground Trails have been awarded the contract for The Yards Bike Park and Curry’s Gap trails.

Curry’s Gap trails are expected to kick off shortly, while final design and DA preparation continues for The Yards. We’ll be opening public consultation shortly as part of that process, and we’re keen to start sharing more of our vision for the space.

While the build keeps rolling ahead, we’re also spending a lot of time focused on what comes next – maintaining the trails, running the operation properly and making sure the project is sustainable long-term.

Angry Bull Trails is a profit for purpose social enterprise run by a voluntary board. Unlike many trail destinations operated by local government, all ongoing maintenance, operations and staffing need to be funded directly through sponsorships, memberships, donations and revenue generated through the Trail Centre and visitor services.

Maintaining a world-class trail network is a significant long-term commitment. Every dollar raised through ABT goes back into trails, operations, youth employment and community outcomes.

We’ll soon be launching the ABT Riders’ Collective. It’s about building a community around the trails – giving riders and supporters a way to contribute to the long-term sustainability of ABT. Members will also have access to benefits, offers and exclusive experiences. More on that soon.

TRAIL CENTRE

The Trail Centre is nearing completion, and the space is looking fantastic.

After years of planning, it’s pretty unreal to see the space finally coming together, from the large deck and community gathering spaces through to practical rider facilities and Tenterfield’s first accessible public lift.

We’re now moving into many of the detailed fit-out and design elements that will help bring the space to life and create a welcoming hub for both locals and visitors.

One thing many people don’t realise is that our infrastructure funding only covers construction of the building itself. Fitout, equipment, furniture and operational setup still need to be funded separately, and fundraising for this next stage is continuing.

SOCIAL IMPACT ENTERPRISE & YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

There’s also been a lot happening behind the scenes on the social enterprise and youth engagement side of the project.

There are immediate job opportunities connected to the project, with Common Ground Trails currently recruiting trail crew for the Tenterfield trail network and bike park works. If you’re interested in working in the trail building industry, jump across to the Common Ground Trails website for more information.

We’ll soon be recruiting for a Youth Pathways Program Coordinator, with additional roles to follow as the project develops. Position updates and opportunities will be shared through the ABT website and social channels.

Over recent months, we’ve also completed a detailed Business Plan and social enterprise framework in partnership with Social Impact Hub and supported by grant funding from FRRR. The Business Plan has helped to establish the long-term structure for youth employment, mentoring and training opportunities connected to the project.

FUNDRAISING & PARTNERSHIPS

We’ve recently launched our Foundation Sponsorship opportunities and have started some really positive conversations with businesses and organisations interested in getting behind the project.

This project has always been about more than trails. It’s about creating long-term opportunities for regional tourism, young people and the broader community.

As an independent profit for purpose organisation, ongoing fundraising, sponsorship and community support are critical to helping us open the doors, maintain the trail network and build a sustainable future for the project.

If you’re interested in sponsorship, partnerships or supporting the project, more information is available on our website.

COMMUNITY

Community has always been a big part of what ABT is about.

It’s been great to see people out at recent events and activities including the Easter Social Ride and FOTA Fete last weekend. We also had a lot of fun at the recent Saddlers MTB Club Social Ride, with riders getting an early look at parts of the future trail network.

Thanks to everyone who came along, helped out and shared feedback across the weekend. The trails are still closed to the public while construction and approvals continue, but it was great to finally get a few people out there for a taste of what’s coming.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support, encourage and back the project as it grows. There’s still a lot of work ahead, but we’re getting closer every day.
